Tube spinning technologies

Decades of experience throughout the world makes Fontijne Formitt the perfect partner for your spinforming needs. Tube spinning technology is a cost effective way to form the end of a diameter transition.

The primary objective of spinforming/tube spinning is to create a symmetrical shape or form from flat stock or tube without creating a major reduction in the thickness of the parent material. We offer several standalone machines for Concentric, Eccentric and Oblique spinforming processes. Spinforming can be applied for several applications.

Catalytic converters

The Fontijne Formitt spinforming process is suitable for the production of catalytic converters as our method eliminates the need for welded end cones and the associated assembly costs. Also complex transition angles such as eccentric and oblique can be addressed.

Concentric spinning

Concentric spinforming machines are forming a reduced end profile that is concentrically aligned with the tube’s central axis. Fontijne Formitt’s concentric Spinner can automatically control the part length without trimming in most cases. Dynamic Length Control provides accurate part length compensation for varying material parameters.

Eccentric & oblique spinning

The Eccentric Spinning Technology (EST) and Oblique Spinning Technology (OST) spinning process forms a reduced end profile that is eccentric to or at an oblique angle to the tube’s central axis without rotating the part. Using advanced mechanical design and machine control techniques, the possibility of spinforming complex transition angles such as eccentric and oblique can be realized.

Space savings

Using different types of angles is especially in the automotive industry a frequently occurring request, because of space saving solutions. The various complex shapes can be more easily connected with other components. For example catalytic converters can be formed EST/OST to save space restrictions in the engine compartment.

Our modern facilities in USA and Europe are specialized in product development, prototyping and production of spinformed hollow tubes, shapes and assemblies to customer specifications.

Spinning versus welding end cones

Spinforming technology eliminates the need for welded tube end-pieces for catalytic converters. For example two circumferential welds for one piece cone ends and six (2x longitudinal and 4x axial) welds for two piece cone ends.

Thereby enhancing overall component quality and reliability, as possible leaks from weld processes are nearly eliminated. Indoor pollution created by welding is eliminated as there are no weld gases.

One piece end cones

One piece end cones which are commonly made by dies in combination with a press for concentric end cones or a hydrostatic process for eccentric and oblique end cones generate between 20% and 40% more scrap rate compared to Spinforming the shell ends. The minor material waste is caused by the subsequent trimming after Spinforming the shell end.

High quality products

The use of Spinforming machines to form tube shaped products leads to a more efficient production process. Significant savings on material and labor costs and the elimination of welding produces a higher quality product, making the spun formed tube product more reliable.

Flexibility

If prototyping or a new product needs to be produced the investment for example in dies for presses is not required. The Spinforming machine typically will not require changes in tooling unless the diameter changes, in this case only the part clamp insert changes.
